One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around you
kept shouting
their bad advice --
though the whole house
began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
at your ankles.
"Mend my life!"
each voice cried.
But you didn't stop.
You knew what you had to do,
though the wind pried
with its stiff fingers
at the very foundations,
though their melancholy
was terrible.
It was already late
enough, and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen
branches and stones.
But little by little,
as you left their voices behind,
the stars began to burn
through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice
which you slowly
recognized as your own,
that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
into the world,
determined to do
the only thing you could do --
determined to save
the only life you could save.
While, admittedly, poetry is my least favorite of all forms of writing, I really loved this poem. I suppose it's because at times, everyone can relate to it. Lately, I've found that I've been stuck in a rut of sorts and there is no better way to explain it than with this poem. There are times that I put everyone else before me -- literally, everyone, even people that I don't like very much, which I find strange, but it happens.
It's times like these when I run myself ragged trying to do everything I can for everyone else. People are pulling on me from all directions wearing me thinner and thinner. No matter how much I'd like to help all of them, things eventually start slipping through the cracks and I get worn so thin that I'm about to snap.
This goes on, as it always does, for a few weeks until I realize that I just can't do it anymore. No matter how much I try to help anyone, I can't fix their problems for them and I can't make everything magically better. It takes a while, but little by little I try to back myself out of everyone else's messes that I've gotten into. (I know it sounds easy, but in reality it's like trying to claw your way out of a lion's mouth.) It's tedious and hard but I do it because I need to for myself, because I am the only one I can actually help and I am the only one that will do anything for me.
